LASIK Eye Surgery

Time to start seeing things clearly?

LASIK eye surgery uses a specialized laser to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. The procedure involves little, if any, discomfort, and most people experience a rapid improvement in vision. Free consultations are offered by St. Luke’s ophthalmologists Timothy Quinn, MD, and John Yoon, MD to determine if an individual could benefit from LASIK eye surgery. Free Lasik eye surgery consultations can be scheduled at Miller Creek Medical Clinic and Mariner Medical Clinic.

Conditions that may be improved with Lasik eye surgery include:
  • Nearsighted (myopia)
  • Farsighted (hyperopia)
  • Astigmatism
There are other laser vision correction techniques that are used to correct a refractive error and in some cases treat an eye disease. These include:
  • PRK
  • LASIK
  • Hyperopic LASIK/PRK
  • Monovision
Which treatment option is best would be decided on an individual basis.  The customized procedure is based on the patient’s unique measurements and prescription.

Considerations
LASIK is a permanent operation and cannot be reversed.  Risks are present with laser treatment as with any surgical procedure. These should be discussed with your doctor before you decide on treatment.  You may need glasses after laser surgery.  Your vision may not be perfect and you may need glasses for reading – even if you did not wear them before treatment.  Dry eyes, difficulty seeing in dim light, rain, snow, fog or bright glare may be a problem after laser.  Pupil size can also affect the outcome and may cause symptoms after surgery.

Alternate treatments available include glasses, contact lenses, IOL (intraocular lens) implant, intracorneal rings, RK and ALK.
